European Union Projects
Dream Project
The DREAM project is the response of the engine community to commercial and environmental pressures that have come about mainly as a result of two main factors:
- The political pressure to reduce CO2 has increased considerably since the publication of the ACARE goals.
- The increased cost of jet A-1 fuel. This has risen from just over $320 per ton in January 2004 to around $900 per ton in November 2007.
DREAM has identified potential technologies necessary to achieve the levels of improvement in engine performance necessary to counter these pressures:
- Open rotor contra-rotating engines.
- Novel enabling architectures and structures, including new mid-frame structures, active and passive engine systems to reduce variations and study active turbine control.
- DREAM will specify and characterize alternative fuels and demonstrate the operation of a small turbofan engine with the selected alternative fuel.
- The DREAM technologies will then be integrated and the engine concepts, together with alternative fuels usage, will be passed through a modified version of the Techno-Economic and Environment Risk Assessment (TERA) tool developed in VITAL and NEWAC.
The DREAM consortium, led by Rolls-Royce, is composed of 44 partners from 13 countries, providing the best expertise and capability from the EU aeronautics industry and Russia PARS Makina Ltd. is involved in DREAM WP 5.4 and is responsible for carrying the following combustor tests:
- Calibration of the fuel injector system for alternative fuel injection into turboshaft engine
- Integration of alternative fuel injector system with tuboshaft combustor test stand
- Low OPR combustion of alternative fuel/air mass flow rates within a turboshaft engine combustor
PARS Makina Ltd. is taking part in DREAM with the aim of contributing to the development and test of cleaner, reliable, environmentally friendly gas turbine engines combustors.
